Michelle Brekken - Attorney

Michelle Brekken grew up in the small town of Lexington, located in the Piedmont area of North Carolina.  She is an honors graduate from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she studied criminal justice and psychology while working part-time at a private law firm.  After interning at the Public Defender’s Office she made the decision to attend law school at the Charlotte School of Law. During law school, Michelle focused her academics on trial litigation and criminal law.  She interned in four prosecutorial offices, including the homicide division in Prince George’s County, Maryland, located just outside of D.C.  In her second year of law school, she was selected to serve as a legal writing teaching assistant where she tutored first year law school students on their oral advocacy and legal writing skills. She also traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi on spring break to volunteer with Mississippi Center for Justice to assist in assessing potential legal claims for those effected by the BP oil spill.  She graduated Cum Laude in 2013 and received an award for her dedication to public service.

After passing the bar, Michelle began working as an associate attorney for Legal Aid in Charlotte, North Carolina where she primarily represented defendants in subsidized housing facing eviction and subsidy termination. During her time with Legal Aid, she assisted in founding the Crisis Intervention Project that provided legal services to indigent families threatened with imminent eviction. Thereafter, Michelle met her husband, Grant and made the transition to Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Awaiting licensure in Minnesota, Michelle worked for Thomson Reuters as an Account Manager training attorneys on how to perform efficient legal research.  After receiving her Minnesota Bar License, she began practicing as an Assistant Public Defender in Chisago County before becoming a member of Miller & Stevens.

Michelle has extensive trial litigation experience as she has completed nearly 50 trials and is currently undefeated in criminal and civil jury trials.  Her practice areas include criminal law, family law, personal injury, and landlord/tenant litigation.  In her free time, Michelle enjoys cooking, traveling and visiting her family in North Carolina.
